Who we are

Members

The Network's membership consists largely of conservation projects that are using (or planning on using) an LMMA approach. A 'member' may consist of one or any combination of individuals, communities, land-owning groups, traditional leaders, government representatives, conservation organization staff, elected decision-makers, university scientists and researchers, and/or donors working together to achieve specific goals related to the conservation or sustainable management of biodiversity, and who are working to implement or enhance an LMMA strategy at one or more specific sites.

The Network has three levels of membership:

Full Membership - Projects that have completed full membership obligations, which include:

  • Obtaining commitment and support from local partners.
  • Completing an initial site description.
  • Developing a community-based management and monitoring plan.
  • Collecting an agreed-upon set of baseline data according to our Learning Framework.
  • Appointing one or more persons to represent the project to the country-wide and/or overall Network.
  • Expressing a desire to practice Adaptive Management.

Provisional Membership - Projects that are interested in full membership and are working toward fulfilling the obligations above.

Associate Membership - Projects, organizations, agencies or individuals that do not necessarily want to be fully involved in the LMMA Network, but who want to be part of a broader network of practitioners and researchers focusing on LMMAs.

Members are asked to abide by the principles set forth in the Social Contract [PDF] , also known as the LMMA Network's "Agreement of Our Promises to Each Other," which was drafted and ratified by Network members.
